Yes, that's it. I picked up another <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001N2I416?ie=UTF8&tag=michastrut-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001N2I416" rel="nofollow">Nike + iPod Sensor</a>and everything works fine. I saw that recommendation from others too...

I have had the same problems calibrating my Nike App. Much as I'd like to believe I can run 5k in 26 minutes, it just isn't true. Are you saying that you just went out and bought another sensor - and this time it just happened to work? Isn't that rather random?

I have been using the altec lansing backbeat 903 with my 3gs. They work great for running with music so far, lets see if my sweet kills them over time.
Tried it once with the nike+ and it didn't work. It seemed like it did not want to have both the headset and the sensor working at the sametime. I will try again tonight. BTW you don't need nike+ shoes necessarily. You and get one of those mini velcro holders that attach to your shoe laces just for this purpose.

Try some stereo Bluetooth headphones that explicitly support EDR and see if that helps. If they have EDR, they'll use less bandwidth and hopefully will collide less with the Nike+.
